UK drone regulations and the Civil Aviation Authority
Drone operations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are overseen by the UK Civil Aviation Authority. The United Kingdom is outside the EASA system, so operators must use current UK legislation, UK CAA policy and the applicable UK authorisation route.
One authority across the United Kingdom
The UK CAA is the civil aviation authority for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland does not have a separate national drone aviation regulator. Local land access, privacy, police and site restrictions can still differ from aviation authorisation requirements.
Do not substitute EASA or IAA guidance
Irish IAA material applies to Ireland. EASA material may be useful background, but it is not automatically the controlling UK requirement. Verify every route, form, competency and operating condition against current UK CAA publications.
Identify the operating category first
Classify the intended operation under the current UK framework before preparing documentation. Record why the operation fits the Open Category or why a Specific Category operational authorisation is required.
