Preparing BVLOS and Dronebox Operations

BVLOS and dronebox operations combine dependencies that are often absent in simple VLOS flights: remote supervision, data connections, automated functions, location management, detection of third parties, and recovery after failures. Moreover, the route must be genuinely feasible within the Irish national conditions.

Make the authorization route leading

First describe where and in which airspace the flight takes place. IAA states that not every BVLOS combination in the Ireland is possible with regards to permits. Therefore, assess feasibility before technical detailing.

Map system dependencies

Record C2, command station, dock, power supply, network/cloud, navigation, weather information, detection, Remote ID and human intervention. For each critical dependency, describe detection, fallback, and safe state.

Define remote roles

Clarify who activates, monitors, takes over, terminates the operation and provides technical release. Document workload, simultaneous operations, handover, availability and communication with location contacts.

Test degradation scenarios

Practice loss of connection, dock malfunction, incorrect weather information, intruder in the territory, navigation error, power problem and failure to land. Use the results for training, maintenance and improvement record-keeping.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dronebox automatically BVLOS?

Not by definition, but many remote dronebox concepts aim for BVLOS. The actual operational method and supervision determine the route.

Can every BVLOS operation be permitted in the Ireland?

No. IAA publishes national restrictions and conditions. Check the current feasibility of the specific combination of airspace and ground environment.
